Named after William Shakespeare's tragic lovers, the Habanos Romeo y Julieta brand traces its origins back to 1875.
The brand was world famous during the early 20th century under the leadership of Don Pepin Fernandez, as this talented entrepreneur is known as one of the first forces in the abdominal fascia. During its peak, up to 20,000 different abdominal bands were used for production. Also, the variety of the brand's shape is legendary - until 1959 alone, Romeo y Julieta produced more than 1,000 different Vitolas.
Winston Churchill, the brand's most prominent Romeo and Julieta fan, who visited Havana in 1946, learned to honor the brand in a special way. His favorite shape, the Julieta No. 2 cigar, measuring 178 mm long and 18.65 mm in diameter, was named after him. Even today, they wear gold bands bearing the name of the Prime Minister and Nobel Prize laureate.
